Gabrielle Lasporte is a Modern Batik Instructor certified by David Kibuka, one of the founders of the Modern Batik Technique. She is using a structured workshop curriculum to teach artists the technique of Modern Batik Art. She is teaching this curriculum to participants in partnership with various studios in Ontario and in conjunction with the TDSB and the Conseil Viamonde (French Public). Workshops are available in English or French and can be tailored to fit student’s specific needs. These classes can be geared towards adults or young adults at different levels of art experience from beginners to advanced.

WHAT IS MODERN BATIK ART?
Modern Batik Art is a revolutionary approach that allows us to create detailed, refined images with dramatically enhanced tonality, shading and depth by applying wax and dyes on fabric. This modification adds increasing background depth, broadness and a richer palette of colours to batik painting, allowing this novel fine art medium to yield control, detail and richness comparable to acrylic and water-colour painting. The diversity of pieces that can be created is truly incredible.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides an introduction to the modern techniques used with the art of batik to create new and more advancedtoning, patterns and textures. It also provides historical context, theoretical foundations and practical applications. This course will provide participants with the foundation to use this modern technique.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT FOR STUDENTS?
Our students live in a world driven primarily by digital forms of entertainment and interaction. While these forms of new media offer incredible benefit, we are losing traditional forms of tactile creativity. Modern Batik Painting reconnects students with their innate capacities as creators and artists. Because the technique is easy to learn, young people from all backgrounds can use the medium to share their stories and their own interpretations of the world. By sharing the skill of Modern Batik Painting we empower students and communities to express themselves and to develop their skillsand confidence as uniquely creative beings.
